APPENDIX F - The Dragon, Personified by the Antichrist

Introduction (Motivation, Mission, and Method of Operation):

When Satan said, “I will be like the most high,” he was expressing his blasphemous motivation to take the place of God. The Dragon metaphorically represents Satan in his desire to fulfill this motivation, and the Antichrist personifies the spirit of the Dragon in the Bible. Adam is the archetype for the Antichrist and death is the curse that empowers the Dragon. Blasphemy is the root sin that feeds this motivation. When the Dragon attempts to replace God, he brings the war in heaven to its ultimate conclusion. After he is defeated in heaven, he brings the war down to the earth where he tries to eradicate all testimony to the one true God and all references to His name.

To fulfill his desire to replace God, the Dragon has created an organization of evil spirits under the command of his lieutenant the Prince of New Rome. The principality of New Rome has been given the power of war and has been assigned the mission to rule over the darkness in economics and commerce. These spiritual hosts of wickedness use their weapons of deception and regulation to make mankind remove all references to the one true God. This is expressed in the world through all forms of bondage and control. This has brought New Rome into conflict with the kingdom of God and particularly God’s evangelists who proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, which sets mankind free from the bondage of sin and death. It is the conflict of freedom versus tyranny.

The Dragon/Antichrist spirits of New Rome commonly use the following method of operation when they make war on mankind. First these evil spirits use economic control to steal mankind’s freedom. Those who give testimony to the one true God are denied access to the goods and services that are necessary for life. If that doesn’t stop their testimony, then the Dragon makes war on the witnesses (martyrs) and seeks to kill them in order to put a final end to their testimony. Whether through tyrannical control or war and death, the ultimate goal of the evil spirits of New Rome is to totally destroy all testimony to the one true God.

I Will Statement: Isaiah 14:14b “I will be like the most High.”

When one thing is like another thing, they may be interchanged. So when Satan declares, “I will be like the most High,” he is stating his intention to replace God. This is the spirit of Antichrist and the root sin of blasphemy.

Reptile: Dragon. (For scripture references see Addendum 11 – The Dragon.)

The Dragon is a fabulous reptile monster with a serpent like body, wings, and claws. It has the ability to fly and to breathe smoke and fire. The Bible also calls the Dragon a fiery flying serpent. Dragon is introduced in the Psalms and Prophets, but he is most noticeable in the book of Revelation. He has always opposed God’s purposes throughout history, from the rebellion of the angels, to the killing of Jesus Christ, and finally to the attempted destruction of all who give testimony to the one true God, both Jews and Christians, both those who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Revelation 12:1-17

1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

The Dragon will empower the Beast of Revelation who is indwelt by the spirit of Antichrist.

Revelation 13:1-2

1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

The Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet will form a blasphemous trinity.

Revelation 16:13-14

13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Jesus, the strong right arm of the Lord, will wound the Dragon.

Isaiah 51:9-10

9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

10 Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

Jesus shall tread upon the Dragon.

Psalms 91:11-13

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

The Dragon will be bound for one thousand years while Christ reigns on the earth.

Revelation 20:1-3

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Dragon, also called a fiery flying serpent, is equated with: lion, adder, Serpent, the Devil, Satan, cockatrice, and viper.

Dragon = Lion = Adder, Psalms 91:13

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Dragon = Serpent = Devil = Satan, Revelation 12:9

9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (See also Rev. 20:2.)

Fiery Flying Serpent = Serpent = Cockatrice, Isaiah 14:29

29 Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

Fiery Flying Serpent = Lion = Viper, Isaiah 30:6

6 The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

Archetype: Adam. (For scripture references see Addendum 16 – Antichrist.)

Adam is the archetype for the Antichrist the personification of the Dragon and all the spirits of control. In the first letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul clearly describes the opposite nature of Adam and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Adam sins by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which God had forbidden. Eve was deceived by the Serpent, but Adam chose to sin as he passively followed his wife's leading.

Genesis 3:6-12

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Empowering Curse: Death.

When Adam chose to follow Eve in rebellion to God's command that they should not eat of the forbidden tree, God placed the following curse on him.

Genesis 3:17-19

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

This empowering curse provides a legal right for the forces of the Dragon to bedevil unredeemed mankind. These are the attributes of the curse given to Adam for his sin.

1. The ground no longer produces freely, it must be worked to produce food.

2. The ground now also produces weeds and nuisance plants.

3. Man's food will of necessity include the lesser desired plants.

4. After a life of hard labor, man will die.

Adam's sin brings a curse on the ecosystem and upon his labor. In the end, Adam will die. He will have literally worked himself to death. So we see that this is a curse of death.

Personification: Antichrist. (For scripture references see Addendum 16 – Antichrist.)

The Antichrist is the great opponent and antagonist of the Lord Jesus Christ, and he will attempt to become the absolute ruler of the earth before the day of the Lord when the Messiah will come as the Loin of the tribe of Judah to rule the earth for one thousand years. He will attempt to eradicate all of God’s elect people, both Jews and Christians, in order to eliminate every witness and all testimony of the one true God. The term antichrist only occurs in the epistles of John. There it refers only to the spirit that opposes the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ. The world ruler revealed in Daniel and Revelation who will be empowered by this spirit is called the Beast. However, Antichrist has come to be the popular reference for both the spirit and the man who will be empowered by him. I will use the Antichrist and the Beast interchangeably.

The spirit of Antichrist denies God the Father and God the Son:

1 John 2:18-23

18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. (See also 1 Jn. 4:1-4 and 2 Jn. 1:5-9)

The Antichrist spirit has always opposed God and His plan to reconcile fallen mankind unto Himself through the sacrifice of His Son. In the end, the spirit of Antichrist will fill the Beast and empower him to make war on the saints of God.

Daniel 7:15-28

15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet;

20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.

21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

The archetype for the Beast was the Seleucid king Antiochus Epiphanes who sacrificed a pig on the alter of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. This led to the Maccabean revolt that freed the Jews from Hellenistic domination by the Seleucids (Syria) and the Ptolemys (Egypt) until they were later conquered by Rome. He was foretold in the prophesies of Daniel:

Daniel 8:3-27

3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.

7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.

20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

The Beast will kill the two witnesses who prophesy during the Apocalypse.

Revelation 11:3-13

3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The Dragon (and Satan) will give the Beast his authority.

(See also 2 Thes. 2:1-10.)

The Beast will blaspheme God and make war with the saints.

Revelation 13:3-10

3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

The False Prophet will lead the world in the worship of the Beast.

Revelation 13:11-18

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

The False Prophet will also cause men to receive the mark of the Beast.

Revelation 13:16-18

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Those who worship the Beast will be tormented.

Revelation 14:9-12

9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

The saints of God will have victory over the Beast.

Revelation 15:1-4

1 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.

2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. (See also Rev. 20:4-6.)

A plague will come upon those who receive the mark of the Beast.

Revelation 16:1-2

1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

Revelation 16:10-11

10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

The Beast will form an unholy trinity with the Dragon and the False Prophet.

Revelation 16:13

13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

When the Lord Jesus Christ returns, the Beast will lead the armies that oppose the Lord.

Revelation 16:12-16

12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

The Beast will have an uneasy alliance with the great whore.

Revelation 17:1-18

1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

When He returns, the Lord Jesus Christ will defeat the Beast’s armies and cast the Beast and the False Prophet into the lake of fire.

Revelation 19:11-21

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. (See also: Dan. 7:9-14, 2 Thes. 2:8, and Rev. 20:7-10.)

Aliases: The Beast, the Wicked One, the Man of Sin, the Son of Perdition, and the Little Horn.

The Beast, Revelation 13:18

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

The Wicked One, 2 Thessalonians 2:8

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

The Man of Sin and the Son of Perdition, 2 Thessalonians 2:3

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The Little Horn, Daniel 7:8

8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. (See also Dan. 7:20-26 and 8:9.)

Root Sin: Blasphemy.

It is not hard to identify the Beast’s root sin. Blasphemy is written upon his heads.

Revelation 13:1

1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. (See also: Rev. 13:5-6, 16:10-11 and 17:3)

We also see the Beast perform the sin of blasphemy when he sits in the temple of God and when he receives the worship of men as if he were God.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Revelation 13:8

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (See also: Rev. 13:12, 14-15, 16:2, 19:20, and 20:4.)

Other Roots: Abominations, defiance, fornication, lying, murder, pride, unrighteousness, and witchcraft.

Abominations and Fornication, Revelation 17:3-5

3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Defiance, 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Lying, 1 John 2:22

22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

Murder, Revelation 13:15

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. (See also: Dan. 8:24, Rev. 11:3-13, 12:11, and 17:6.)

Pride, Daniel 8:25

25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Unrighteousness, 2 Thessalonians 2:8-10

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Witchcraft, Daniel 8:25

25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Principality: New Rome.

Antichrist becomes most prominent at the end of the age, so the last empire, the New Roman Empire, was associated with him.

Power: War.

The Dragon gives the Beast power to make war and to conquer. Most will surrender willingly to his power, but those who don’t will be destroyed without mercy. This includes the saints of God who will refuse to worship the Beast.

Revelation 13:4-7

4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. (See also: Dan. 7:21, 25, Rev. 11:7, 12:17, 16:12-16, 17:14, 19:19, and 20:7-10.)

Rules Over Darkness In: Commerce.

The Beast will have absolute authority over economics and commerce so that he can regulate both the buying and selling of commodities and goods.

Revelation 13:16-17

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (See also Rev. 20:4)

Manifests In The World As: Control.

The Dragon/Antichrist class of spirits manifest in the world through many forms of tyranny and control.

Revelation 20:4

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (See also Rev. 13:16-17.)

Weapons: Persecution, laws, regulations, deception, and power, signs, and lying wonders.

Persecution, Revelation 12:13

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. (See also Rev. 13:15.)

Laws, Daniel 7:25

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Regulations, Revelation 13:15-17

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Deception, 2 John1:7

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. (See also: 2 Thes. 2:10, Rev. 13:14, 19:20, 20:3, 8.)

Power, Signs, and Lying Wonders, 1 Thes. 2:8-10

8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

10 Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

Steals, Kills, and Destroys:

The great motivation of the Dragon/Antichrist class of spirits is to totally destroy all testimony unto the one true God of creation and to the Lord Jesus Christ, the only true savior of mankind. This motivation comes from the Beast’s desire to have all men worship him as God. It grows directly from his root sin of blasphemy. The Beast uses two levels of force to achieve his goal. The first is to steal freedom through tyrannical laws and economic regulations. If the Lord’s witnesses refuse to acknowledge the Beast’s control, then he has power to make war on them and to kill them for their testimony to God.

The Beast steals freedom primarily through tyrannical laws and economic regulations.

Daniel 7:25

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Revelation 13:17

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Traditionally, the two witnesses are the law and the prophets. The law was personified by Moses the lawgiver and the prophets by Elijah who was the first of the great prophets of Israel. Speaking of these two witnesses in Matthew 5:17 Jesus said that he came not “to destroy the law, or the prophets” but to fulfill them. We see in the passage above that these two witnesses have the power to withhold the rain which was one power given to Elijah and they have the power to smite the earth with plagues which was the sign Moses gave to Egypt. Just as John the Baptist represented the ministry of Elijah before the first advent of the Christ, I expect that two prophets will be brought forth during the time when the prophesies of Revelation are fulfilled to represent the testimony of the law and the prophets.

In a more general sense, the law was the basis for Judaism and the prophets who prophesied about the coming Messiah laid the basis for Christianity. So in the end, the Dragon will try to destroy all of the witnesses for the one true God and all of the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ, the true savior of the world. He will empower the Beast to make war on all of God’s saints, the Jews who “keep the commandments of God” and the Christians who “have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Revelation 12:17

17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (See also: Dan. 7:15-28, 8:24, and Rev. 13:7.)

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream: The feet of iron and clay representing some form of a New Roman Empire.

In Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, the feet of iron and clay represent a future world empire that is yet to be. Because the feet are a continuation of the legs and are still made of iron, though mixed with clay, I’ve chosen to call this last empire the New Roman Empire. Antichrist becomes most prominent at the end of the age, so the last empire, the New Roman Empire, was associated with him.

Daniel’s Dream: The little horn of the Beast, which is the Antichrist.

In Daniel’s dream, a little horn grows up on the head of the Beast and replaces some of the horns that preceded it. It is believed that this little horn represents a new and different instance of the Beast, a new empire, that will appear in the future, at the end of this present age. Antichrist becomes most prominent at the end of the age, so the last empire, the New Roman Empire, was associated with him.

Canaanite People Group: Jebusite.

Jebusite means trodden or a threshing place. The Jebusite stronghold was Jerusalem and their king took the title Adonizedek, which means lord of justice (or righteousness). He ruled in Jerusalem, which means peace, so he was also the prince of peace. So the Jebusites are associated with the Dragon/Antichrist class of spirits who oppose the true lord of righteousness and prince of peace the Lord Jesus Christ who will return and rule the earth from Jerusalem. We may also note that this class of spirits is most prominent in the last days, which are known as a time of harvest and ties us back with the definition of a threshing place.

Midianite Prince: Evi.

Evi means desirous, covet, lust, adversary, and hating. He was associated with the Dragon/Antichrist class of spirits because of their desire to replace God and the hatred that breeds.

Amorite King: Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem.

Anoni-Zedek means Lord of Justice or Lord of Righteousness and Jerusalem means peace. Adonizedek is associated with Antichrist who tries to supplant the true Lord of Righteousness and Prince of Peace.

Philistine City: Gaza (strong).

Gaza means strong. Gaza is aligned with the Antichrist who is associated with the god of force (or fortresses) in Daniel 11:38-39.

Giant: Unnamed.

The unnamed giant is associated with the Dragon who empowers the Beast of Revelation. This Beast will be filled with the spirit of Antichrist and his name is yet to be revealed.

Opposes: Evangelists.

The Antichrist tries to make everything subject to him, but evangelists bring the good news of salvation that sets us free. So this is the battle between tyranny and liberty. We see that the gospel brings us freedom in the following two passages:

2 Corinthians 3:17

17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Galatians 5:1

1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Mountain Goats

These mountain goats are part of a herd that ranges along the Continental Divide in Colorado. They were used for the banner of the "Area Indoctrination Briefing" because of the obvious association of Satan with goats.
