ADDENDUM 1 – Lucifer

Lucifer was the proper name for the archangel who led a third of the angels in a revolt against God. Subsequent to his revolt and fall from his first estate, he has been known by many names, titles, and functions, but most notably by Satan or the Devil. Lucifer is translated from the Hebrew word heylel (Strong’s 1966), which literally means brightness and is associated with Venus as the morning star. Heylel comes from the Hebrew root halal (Strong’s 1984), which means to shine forth with color in a showy or boastful way. Derivative appellations from Lucifer include: shining (or bright) one, son of the morning (or Venus as the morning star a counterfeit of the Lord Jesus Christ), and an angel of light.

The only occurrence of the name Lucifer in the Bible is at Isaiah 14:12. The surrounding passage is a taunt against the king of Babylon that spans Isaiah 14:1-23. However, the section contained in verses 12-17 goes beyond the human king to describe the evil spirit that empowers him.

Another passage found in the twenty-eighth chapter of Ezekiel gives a lamentation for the king of Tyrus. However, again in the midst of the passage the scripture goes beyond the human king to reveal the spirit that empowers him. This scripture describes a brilliant anointed cherub who is covered with colorful precious stones. Here we are given a brief description of Lucifer’s life and his ultimate fate.
